One of these efforts is providing clean water to villages across the globe.
In many corners of our Earth, people regularly struggle to get access to safe and sanitary drinking water, which is a basic human need for survival, and without it, more than health is impacted.
First and foremost, lack of sanitary drinking water leads to preventable and sometimes deadly illnesses. Contaminated water can carry diseases like cholera and typhoid, which can lead serve dehydration and even death.
But not only that, without clean water to wash your hands or bathe with, sanitation issues arise. And especially as the population increases, sanitation is a growing concern, and COVID-19 has further proven that unfettered access to clean water for handwashing is imperative to preventing disease.
Access to clean water also disproportionately impacts women, children, and communities at large. When water is scarce, the duty to collect water for drinking, cooking, and bathing usually falls upon women and children. Sometimes this means women must walk miles each way numerous times a week to bring water to their families.
In education, children, especially young girls, are sometimes pulled out of to dedicate more time to gathering water. Cutting children's education short causes grander ramifications for the community as a whole. When one member of a community suffers, every member does.
It is impossible to list the effects contaminated water has on society. Clean water is sometimes taken for granted, but without it, people’s lives are drastically different.
The numerous problems that contaminated water causes are why we directly contribute to organizations that find sustainable solutions to the clean water crisis that directly benefit the local community. Organizations build wells, hand water pumps, and other long-lasting solutions.
